Legacy Dove — Founder's Bio

Some stories are waiting to be told. Gary R. Mayo II built Legacy Dove to make sure yours is.

When his father passed away unexpectedly in his early twenties, Gary was left holding what so many grieving families hold — fragments. Memories that fade at the edges. Stories half-remembered. And then, years later, a video. A few minutes of footage that brought his father back, if only for a moment. That video didn't just bring comfort. It changed the way Gary understood what film could do.

He went to film school knowing he wanted to tell stories. He left knowing which story mattered most.

Near the end of his studies, his grandmother was diagnosed with cancer. Gary did what filmmakers do — he picked up a camera. He sat with her. He listened. He captured her the way she deserved to be remembered: fully, on her own terms, in her own words. When she was gone, what remained wasn't just grief. It was her. He did the same for his grandfather. And then for others. And Legacy Dove was born — not as a business idea, but as a calling.

Gary holds a Bachelor's in Film and a Master's in Digital Communication from Wilmington University, where he also serves as an adjunct film instructor. He is an ordained minister — a dimension of his life that quietly shapes everything he does at Legacy Dove, from the patience he brings to each conversation to the reverence he holds for the lives being documented. His narrative work, including the faith-based feature Conviction (2022), which holds a 7.6 on IMDb and streams on Tubi and Amazon Prime Video, reflects the same conviction that drives Legacy Dove: that the most powerful stories aren't scripted. They're lived.

Each Legacy Dove film is a cinematic documentary experience: interview-style conversations and personal messages captured with the care and intention of a professional production. Not just a slideshow. Not just a highlight reel. A film. One your family will return to again and again, the way Gary returns to that video of his father.
